梅雨明（つゆあ）けは日本の南岸（なんがん）では通常（つうじょう）７月中旬（ちゅうじゅん）ごろ，東北地方（とうほくちほう）で７月下旬（げじゅん）。北海道（ほっかいどう）は梅雨（つゆ）がはっきり現（あらわ）れる年とそうでない年がある。梅雨（つゆ）は気象学的（きしょうがくてき）にみると梅雨前線（ばいうぜんせん）が南岸（なんがん）沿（そ）いに停滞（ていたい）することでおこる。梅雨前線（ばいうぜんせん）は通常（つうじょう），５月ごろ台湾と沖縄（おきなわ）に現（あらわ）れ，一進一退（いっしんいったい）しながら北上（ほくじょう）し，ロシア沿海州（えんかいしゅう）まで北上（ほくじょう）する。したがって梅雨（つゆ）は南（みなみ）ほど早く始（はじ）まり，早くおわる。沖縄（おきなわ）の梅雨（つゆ）は〈夏（なつ）ぐれ〉と呼（よ）ばれる。小笠原諸島（おがさわらしょとう）の梅雨も５月が最盛期（さいせいき）。
