In Japan, parents and grandparents go to watch the Sports Day. It is a school event where you can see the children running around as energetically as they can at the field day. Parents bring their own lunch to the event. It is a joy for parents and children to enjoy sports together. Parents will cheer their children to do their best.

The main reason why the field day was held in autumn was because September and October were relatively easy to participate in when there were still many agricultural workers. The field day was held in September and October, which was the off-season for farming, making it easier for local residents to participate in the event.

運動会（うんどうかい）が秋（あき）に開催（かいさい）されるようになったのは、まだ農業従事者（のうぎょうじゅうじしゃ）が多（おお）かった時代（じだい）には9月や10月が比較的（ひかくてき）参加（さんか）しやすかったから、というのが主（おも）な理由（りゆう）です。農業（のうぎょう）の閑期（かんさん）に当（あ）たる9月、10月に運動会（うんどうかい）を開催（かいさい）し、地域住民（ちいいきじゅうみん）にも参加（さんか）しやすい大会（たいかい）としていました。

Nowadays, more and more sports events are held in the spring (May and June). What is the reason for this?

• There are many other events in the fall, such as cultural festivals and school trips, so spread them out to reduce the burden.

Aim of the Sports Day in May

5月に行（おこな）う運動会（うんどうかい）の狙（ねら）い

Having a field day in May has the extremely great benefit of bringing the new class together.

5月に運動会（うんどうかい）を行（おこな）うことは、新（あたら）しいクラスの団結力（だんけつりょく）を高（たか）めるという極（きわ）めて大きなメリットを持（も）っています。

The end of the school year ceremony is held in March, and in April, there is a change of classes, which resets all previous relationships.

3月に終業式（しゅうぎょえんかんけいえんかんけいうしき）が行（おこな）われ、4月にはクラス替（が）えがあってそれまでの人間関係（にんげんかんけい）が一旦（いったん）リセットされます。

As a student, you may be anxious about how you will fit into your new class and what your new homeroom teacher will be like, but it's also a chance to make a lot of new friends and expand your world.

生徒（せいと）としては新（しん）クラスに馴染（なじ）めるか、新（あたら）しい担任（たんにん）はどんな先生かなどの不安（ふあん）もある反面（はんめん）、新（あたら）しい友達（ともだち）をたくさん作（つく）って世界（せかい）を広（ひろ）げるチャンスでもあるのです。
