秋の夜長
"Yonaga" in "long autumn nights" is a term used to describe how long the nights are. It refers especially to the autumn nights, and is used in haiku as a seasonal term for autumn. Autumn is the season when the time from sunrise to sunset is the shortest of the four seasons, and the night time is the longest. Especially after the autumnal equinox, the nights gradually become longer and longer, hence the term "long autumn nights" is used.
Autumn evenings are the perfect opportunity to try something you have always wanted to try, and spending quality time in the easy evening hours will give you the energy you need for tomorrow.
How Japanese people enjoy autumn
"Autumn is the season for sports." Many schools may have held their athletic meets (sports festivals) in the fall. Originally, fall was considered to be the best season for sports because the weather was neither too hot nor too cold, making it easy to play sports. However, it is not only the weather that has come to be known as the fall for sports.
It was the 1964 Tokyo Olympics that brought about the "sporting fall. The opening ceremony of the then Tokyo Olympics was held on October 10, 1964. In 1966, October 10 was designated as "Sports Day" to commemorate this event.
Autumn is the season for reading.
Cool and pleasant weather is ideal for reading books. Enjoying reading in the long autumn evenings is recommended because the long nights allow more time for reading. The cooler and more pleasant weather allows for greater concentration and deeper reading of books than in other seasons. By concentrating on reading a book, you can gain new knowledge, and by getting into the story, you can enrich your imagination and expressive power. In Japan, there is a period called "Reading Week," which in 2021 will last for two weeks from October 27 to November 9.
For those who do not usually read books, it may be a good idea to spend long autumn nights leisurely reading.
Autumn is the season for the arts.
As in the case of "Autumn for Sports" and "Autumn for Reading," it is said that after the hot summer, the weather becomes more comfortable and the stress from the environment decreases, which reduces the burden on the mind and allows people to enjoy the arts in autumn. It is also said to be the season when plants begin to turn autumn leaves and vegetables and fruits bear fruits, and people want to preserve the beautiful scenery and often come into contact with art, such as taking pictures and drawing pictures. How about making aroma candles or arranging flowers with dried flowers?

Fall Colds and Prevention
People are more likely to catch colds in the fall, and the reason why more people catch colds from summer to fall is first of all the sudden change in temperature. The body is tired from the summer heat, and the body's immunity and resistance are weakened by the summer heat. When the weather suddenly turns chilly in autumn, the body is unable to adapt to the change in temperature, and the change in temperature causes the autonomic nervous system to become disorganized, making it easier to fall ill.
It is said that humans easily lose the balance of their autonomic nervous system when there is a sudden change in temperature of 5°C or more. When the autonomic nervous system is disturbed, saliva and other secretions are reduced and the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat become dry, making it easier for bacteria and viruses to invade. When the autonomic nervous system is disturbed, the function of immune cells that inhibit the movement of cold viruses is also reduced, making the body even more susceptible to colds. The difference in temperature between morning and evening, which is characteristic of autumn, is another factor in catching a cold.
Symptoms include a sore throat, cough, fever, and headache. Fever does not often reach a high level as in the winter flu season. However, the temperature difference can cause a cough that lasts indefinitely in some people. The symptoms are not so severe, but they tend to linger for a long time. It is not uncommon for a person to catch a cold once and then contract a cold caused by a different virus or bacteria. In order to pass through autumn and winter as cold-free as possible, it is advisable to take precautions against colds.
